About Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown advantage

Real diamonds. Grown with intention.

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond — identical in chemistry, sparkle, and hardness. The only difference is where it came from. Here's what that means for the ring you'll wear for decades.

What makes them real?

Both lab-grown and mined diamonds are pure carbon crystallised in a cubic structure. Under the microscope, a jeweler's loupe, or an IGI certificate, they are indistinguishable. Lab-grown diamonds refract light the same way, scratch the same things, and shine just as long — because they are, physically and chemically, the same thing.

How they are grown

Two methods, both decades-mature:

  • HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): recreates the deep-earth conditions that produce mined diamonds — intense pressure, 1500°C heat, carbon source. Crystal forms around a seed.
  • CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): a carbon-rich gas is ionised in a chamber; carbon atoms rain onto a diamond seed plate and build up layer by layer.

Both produce gem-quality rough that's then cut, polished, and graded by the same labs — IGI, GIA — using the same 4C criteria.

Every Elista diamond is certified

We grade through IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) — the two most respected gemological bodies in the world. Every stone ships with a printed report so you know exactly what you're wearing: cut, colour, clarity, carat, measurements, and any treatments.

Why we chose lab-grown

Elista was built on a simple idea: a diamond should be beautiful, traceable, and fair. Lab-grown lets us hand our customers a stone whose origin we can actually prove — and pass along the 30-40% cost savings. We'd rather you get a bigger, cleaner centre stone than pay for centuries-old marketing.

Environmental impact

One mined carat disturbs, on average, hundreds of tonnes of earth. Lab-grown uses a fraction of the land and water. Our labs source renewable electricity wherever possible, and our workshops use recycled gold and platinum for settings — so the entire piece on your finger can trace its footprint.

A note on resale

Honest answer: resale values for both lab-grown and mined diamonds are a fraction of retail, and most of what you pay for is craftsmanship, setting, and brand. Diamonds — any diamond — are something you buy to keep, not to flip. That's true of anything handmade and meaningful.
